There are various types of acne and these are shown below:-

1. Acne Vulgaris – This is the most commonly experienced form of acne and appears around puberty.  It generally affects a person’s face, shoulders and chest. Often it is caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structure which consists of hair follicles and the associated sebaceous glands) and lesions will appear which are commonly known as pimples, spots or zits.

2. Acne Rosacea – Is a red rash mostly found on a person’s face.

3. Acne Keloidalis Nuchae – Known also as Pseudofolliculitis Nuchae.  This type of acne forms as a rash caused by shaving.

4. Acne Conglobata – Also known as Hidradenitis Suppurativa – Is the forming of chronic abscesses or boils on the sweat glands and hair follicles.  Generally areas in which it appears is under the underarms, groin and buttocks as well as under womens breasts.

5. Acne Cosmetica – Is a type of acne caused by cosmetic products.

6. Acne Fulminas – This is a more extreme form of Acne Conglobata.

7. Acne Medicamentosa – Generally forms when a person is starting or finishing a course of medication.

8. Baby Acne – Is a type of acne rash that forms on the cheeks, chin and forehead of babys and infants.

9. Chloracne – Is caused by a person being exposed to chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dioxins or PCB’s.

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin which causes the pores to become blocked and and visible shows as pimples, blackheads and whiteheads and cysts or nodules.

It is often caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structure which consists of hair follicles and the associated sebaceous glands) and lesions will appear which are commonly known as pimples, spots or zits. The term acne comes from a corruption of Greek words “acme” meaning skin erruption and “bacne” or ” backne” which is often used to indicate the form of acne found on a person’s back.

Most teenagers are affected by acne, but not restricted to this group as adults can also get acne. Acne is especially common in Western societies most likely due to a high genetic disposition to getting it. It is often considered to be an abnormal response to normal levels of the male hormone testosterone in the body and for many people this tends to diminish over time so the acne then often disappears or at least decrease usually when a person reaches their early 20′s. There is no way to predict just how long it will take for the acne to disappear completely and for some individuals they may continue to suffer from acne for decades later (sometimes in to their 30′s or 40′s or even beyond these).

A large percentage of the world population is affected by acne at some stage during their life and can be emotionally upsetting and cause disfiguring in cases that lead to scarring.

Acne the medical term Acne Vulgaris is a skin condition that commonly afflicts people during their teenage years. Acne pre-dominantly affects the face and appears as that lesions can take several different forms: blackheads, whiteheads and cysts. Although acne in most case is a skin condition, it can also show up on the back, neck, shoulders and chest. Whilst it is most common in teenagers, adults can also suffer with acne. Acne is not an infection that occurs on a particular race or gender as it affects male and female and all races equally.

What Is Acne?

Acne is a dermatological term that includes clogged pores, pimples and lumps or cysts that appear on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. Acne occurs most commonly in teenagers, but is not restricted to any age group, affecting even adults in their forties. This disease has many varieties, and although none are life threatening, the more severe cases of acne can be disfiguring, leaving permanent scars on effected areas.

The physical changes in body tissue – or lesions – which acne causes are described in five ways: comedos, papule, pustule, nodule and cyst.  These terms denote range or severity with comedo (also known as blackheads and whiteheads) at one end and nodules or cysts at the other.

As stated above, acne is most common among teenagers, affecting teens between the ages 12 and 17. Usually, mild cases can be cleared up with over-the-counter treatments and the acne goes away by the early twenties. It also should be noted that although acne affects both girls and boys equally, there are some distinctions. Young men are more likely to have severe, long-term acne while women can have reoccurring or intermittent acne well into adulthood due to hormonal changes and cosmetics.
